First egg

We got our first egg yesterday,it was laid on the ground in the coop, we had a metal nest in the coop,but had no straw in it as we did not think it was time for them to lay.My question is,what kind of straw do we need to make the nest out of?And how do you get them to go in the nest rather than on the ground?

I don't raise chickens so I don't know the answers to your questions but hopefully a expert can chime in.

I use pine shavings from Tractor Supply. Works great and the girls love to scratch around in it.
