First Egg!

Congrats on your first egg.... 2 of mine just started laying ... Both eggs are small.... I'm pretty sure 1 of my BA's laid this one today.... It's the smallest one I've gotten so far... lol

We got our first egg today! I believe it was one of our Isa Browns. They are a week younger than the Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks, but have been very noisy lately and crouching. Especially Thelma. Their combs and cheeky things (don't know what they are called) are redder than the rest. Our local feed store did just tell me yesterday, that Isa's tend to lay about a month earlier than others I think one of our Barred Rocks, Laverne will be next...her comb looks exceptionally nice. We have two each of Barred Rock, Isa Brown, and Rhode Island Red....I can't wait for more eggs. Oh, and she did lay in the nesting box. Since we allow them to free range a good part of the day, I was worried I would never find first eggs laid in flower gardens, or elsewhere in the yard.

Anyone know how long it takes them to lay consistently? Some days we get 4 eggs, others two, sometimes only 1 egg. Today we got three. One of the chickens still isn't laying also. I think it's the Light Brahma. She is the only one I haven't seen in the nesting box yet.

A slight disappointment is the Easter Egger is laying brown eggs instead of Blie or Green like we were hoping for.

How old are they? I really think it depends on the chicken and what they're eating. I had half start around 18 weeks and were great right off the bat, the other half was at about 22 weeks and by the end of 24 or 25 we had a pretty continuous supply. I'm sure some are shorter and some are longer.

Three are 22 weeks and the other two are 20 weeks.

I feed them Mana Pro Egg Maker feed. I'm thinking about starting a fodder feed system. Still unsure about it though.

We got our first eggs 3 days a go. Then we got one egg the next day, yesterday we got nothing... We have 8 hens. Once they start laying they don't keep laying?? When do they become consistent?

It takes some time to get the kinks out. There's no set limit. Also they're probably not going to lay every day depending on the breed. I have leghorns that lay every day and I have orpingtons that lay up to 5 a week on a really good week.

Also it takes roughly 25 hours to make an egg. So over time the hen may "skip" a day because of the time frame.

My flock started laying about three weeks ago, and they still aren't consistent. Of course, I think only 2 out of the six are laying, with maybe one more. I've seen just about everyone in the nest box at one point, but many of them still seem to be practicing. They sit in the nest, move the fake egg around, throw material on their back, and even sing the egg song, but when I go down - Nada!

Right now we're only getting one egg a day - two if we're lucky. I keep telling those chooks that they better start pulling their weight around here! They can't let one or two hens do all the work!
