First Egg!

I have four free-loaders right now. (over a year old) Two with chicks, one trying to hatch chicks (not gonna happen this year), and one who's thinking about trying to hatch. If it weren't for having the leghorns around we'd starve around here haha

I think just because I posted yesterday the last non-layer decoded to jump on the band wagon and lay. We got 5 eggs (only have 5birds) today for the first time! So exciting.

Waiting for the first egg is like waiting for Christmas morning. Feels like it will never happen!

My pullets are 18 weeks (3 Easter Eggers, 5 Buff Orps) and two of them started squatting yesterday.

I have 3 EEs at almost 16 weeks and 2 BAs at almost 12 weeks.

We got our first egg today, finally! Yippee! We have a BR, EE, Black Orpington (supposedly blue), Golden Laced Wyandotte, Buff Silkie bantam, Mottled Cochin bantam, Buff Brahma bantam, and a cute little Sultan. They are all 23 weeks old as of yesterday. It was the EE that laid the first egg and it is a very small greenish blue. Beautiful! All of the hens are squatting now when petted (no rooster here) and have very red combs and wattles so we expect more eggs very soon. The Black Orp, is the only one that still has some pink in her comb and she is the largest hen in the yard. So eggscited about our first egg!!

If the first egg is usually smaller then I feel so sorry for our Sherlock. She laid her first this morning. It was a lot bigger than the ones in the store. I haven't cracked it open yet. We are saving them until we can all 5 have the best breakfast ever. It pretty much fills the entire palm of my hand. The shell is very hard and it's kind of long shaped. Maybe this isn't her first? She laid in her box and I haven't seen any around the yard. Our girls are 22 weeks old today.

We got our 3 Wyondottes aged 10 weeks back in June 2014. I had started to think that we would never see an egg (and was the butt of endless jokes from friends and colleagues) and assumed I would now have to wait until spring! Then last Saturday on a freezing cold January day we had our first beautiful egg I squealed so loud the family came running!! She laid one the following morning and in all 5 in a week.
