We got our first egg today, I found it on the floor. I have never seen my girls go in their nesting boxes. How do I get them to go in them?

Congrats on the egg!!!!

The most effective way to get them to lay in the nests are fake eggs. (Or even golf balls.) Hens feel safer and more comfortable laying where there are other eggs. If this doesn't work then you'll need to hang curtains, make sure the nests are comfy for the hens and maybe even build them somewhere else. But try those fake eggs first.

Would the fake eggs also help to keep my girls from kicking the shavings out of the nest box? They just started laying yesterday, and the boxes where I found eggs were nearly empty of shavings (they'd scratched it into the center of the coop). One of the eggs was slightly cracked, probably from landing on bare wood.

thanks!

No, fake eggs won't help with that. But putting a board across the bottom as in the pic below, will.
