One of my hens laid her first egg. It's light brown with little white specks. We've had her on layer feed (with oyster shells) for a while now. I've given her eggs shells here and ther and snacks. I just purchased oyster shells because I had a little scare last week thinking she was egg bound. Is there something wrong? Should I do something different. Thank you.
Young pullets will lay strange eggs until the kinks get worked out. Remember, while calcium is important for egg formation, too much calcium can also cause issues. Don't overthink the diet and keep it simple. A good quality layer feed should not need supplementation. Adding occasional treats of various foods should keep everyone happy. Good luck and enjoy your eggs!
'Speckled' eggs can happen for several different reasons...very few of which are a 'problem'.
Can be caused by:
Excess or uneven pigment coating.
Excess or uneven cuticle(bloom).
Excess calcium deposits.
Porous eggs can appear speckled.
Some birds lay them consistently, some only once in awhile.
The pigment or bloom can change appearance when wet, then change back when dry again.
As long as bird is getting a good diet and is healthy in every other way, it is no cause for concern
