Today just before dark a mink came up little ditch that goes through poultry yard. Chickens gave alarm for ground predator just on other side of ditch causing dog to run promptly in that direction. Dog stopped short when crossing ditch and ran up through only green patch of grass on place, He barked a couple times and started fighting with something I could not see. Initially I though muskrat until seeing mink jump at dog. I got down there and mink began running down hill through brambles that dog had to run around. It took a couple minutes of running about through heavy vegetation but dog caught and killed mink before bringing it up into yard. Mink and weasels I have never lost birds to personally but presently several hens brooding in ground are very close to location where mink was contacted. Mink concern me more than most predators because my pens offer no protection from them. I was surprized at how well dog was able to line out and dispatch mink. It is a smelly little bugger.

Very interesting to see that your GSH is doing one of the jobs for which the breed was originally developed.

Original selection efforts must not have been all that degraded by more recent selection for use as a bird dog. Once he got into effort he acted almost like a terrier. I was surprised to see he was not repelled by smell.

I had surgery several years ago, and my surgeon was first generation German born in this country. Needless to say we got talking dogs. He would visit his grandparent's farm in Germany on a yearly basis, and had some great stories about the GSH pointers that his grandfather raised. They were everything from pets to guard dogs to farm protectors to boar hounds and the list went on and on.

I think at least some retain that flexibity. This one does all but hunt boar although some of our oppossums might be mistaken for one. Dog learns very fast. The family dog qualities are not to be over looked. He transitions seamlessly back and forth from LGD to baby sitter of curtain-climber son. Only down side which my wife will indicate is dog opens doors / gates allowing son to "escape". I never had a dog so prone to open things.

My SIL had a GSH and he was the second most intelligent dog that I have ever known. The most intelligent was a Belgian strain GS that I still miss after more than 40 years.
