FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH MINK IN POULTRY YARD

I lost a lot of birds to a mink, never could catch it or kill it...give that dog a bone and a hug!

There is a guy down here in SE Louisiana that has some of the best hog-dogs in the world. He breeds some German Short Haired into every other generation. They are phenomenal!

I had a female and she could dig under any fence in seconds! We poured a concrete chainwall and she went right over the top of the fence as soon as she saw what we had done.

We gave her to a dear friend who lived in the country. That was about 35 years ago and he still talks about that incredible animal. She is in just about every family photo they ever took.

Many dogs are escape artists and will sometimes damage themselves to get job done. With such dogs either the confinement needs to be made truely escape proof or dog is allowed to roam. Such dogs are always high energy and usually on the smart side so more training investment needed to keep them out of trouble and productive. The escape artist dogs tended to be the all-round farm dogs but they were a good 3 years old before their activities ceased making you wince.

Forgive my ignorance, but how would I know if I smelled a mink? What do they smell like? Ferrets?

It is similar to a skunk but sweeter and more acrid at same time. The mink is likely to leave smell of self anywhere it frequents. Smells are hard to describe even when I can go down and pickup smell 2 days later.

Weasels have their own smell as well that I think we can pickup on.
