Hello. On August 19 two of the chickens started laying. Every other day seems to be their schedule. (First chickens, by the way.) The eggs are still kind of small. I cracked open four today for breakfast. These would be the first time to eat any of them. One of them had black spots. I didn’t know what that was, so I didn’t eat that egg. Does anyone know what the spots are. One of the other eggs had one spot like that, but I was able to remove it with a knife.

Hi! Congrats on the first eggs!!!
The spots may be ‘meat spots’- small blood spots that sometimes ocur when the yoke is released from the ovary. Meat spots are harmless. Next time you crack open eggs take a photo to show what you’re seeing.

It’s a habit of mine to crack all eggs into a bowl before using— except when boiling eggs, of course.

I never heard of a meat spot. I have heard of blood spots and that you shouldn’t eat those eggs. However, the photo that accompanied the blood spot information had spots that were bigger and red like blood. These look like black pepper. So eggs that look like they’re pre-peppered are OK to eat. Thanks for the info.

I have family in Michigan. That’s where my Mom was from. So do the people who live in the UP also go “up north”?
