First goose

In addition to the Romaine, Watermelon and Corn on the Cob...which are more for treats then regular diet, mine are free range on 3 acres pretty much all day. So, 3 adult geese and 8 goslings wandering around chowing down on the farm. We do put out Purina Flock Raiser for the babies and the adults as well as cracked corn for the adults. So far so good on them not being picky. In another couple of weeks we will try the treats with the goslings which should be fun. The adults will know what it is and go crazy eating it. The goslings will probably have to figure things out.

Lucy is eating the new grass we put down. Yah!!! We are going to give the chickens, ducks and Lucy some watermelon today. Do you think it would be ok to give my quail a bit of it also?

Don't see that it would hurt. Maybe just put down a few chunks and see how they react. Birds are pretty smart and will shy away from stuff they should not have. I have never had quail though so just give it a try and see. It is, afterall, mainly sweetness and water. I use it a lot during the summer to help cool them down. With chickens you can freeze it and put the frozen chunks out during the hot weather and they go nuts.

Oh and is the Purina Flock Raiser a good regular feed for an adult goose? One she can have daily? She's loving the chicken scratch and dried meal worms, but I don't want to continue this on a regular diet since I understand it is treat food only. And I don't want her to get unhealthily fat.I need your 3 acres. We are running out of room here. Aaarrgh :)

Flock Raiser is what I feed everyone. It is a good balance of nutrition and formulated for chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, etc. Right now I am even feeding it to 8 brand new goslings and they are growing by leaps and bounds. Combined with plenty of grass they could not be more healthy.

I haven't even seen a water melon in the stores yet if there was any they'd probably be pretty expensive here, I'll have to wait till later before mine get any, but it is still cool here too.

I mix cracked corn in with FR at 80/20 that's 80 FR to 20 cracked corn. that maybe the incentive to get her to eat her FR easier.

We have watermelon here pretty much year round. In the winter months it is pretty expensive but yearly average is 3.99 to 5.99 each. Large ones and small personal ones, mainly from Mexico and Central America in the Fall through early Spring. But in late spring and summer they are all local. Really big and sweet. Seedless, seeded, red, yellow and last year a blue one. That and locally grown cantaloupe and honeydew...one of the great things about living in West Texas in the summer. It may get hot but we got our melons!!!!!
