I just recently had my first ever group of chicks hatch and I'm confused on how to identify them by color. They are a cross between a Buff Opington Roo and my hens are 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte and 1 Barred Rock. There eggs are almost the exactly same color so it's kind of hard to distinguish between the two. I have 4 chicks that have hatched so far: 3 blonde with small black marking on there heads and 1 that is solid black. I am still a newbie so I haven't learned very much about what colors they will be and so forth. I have read on the forum that the BO and BR cross should produce a sex link. Is this correct?? And if so, what colors will match match which sex?? Thanks in advance for any help.

Buff Orp Roo over a Barred Rock pullet will create Sex links, the Males will be black with a headspot and females will be all black without headspot(yellow/cream colored headspot)

now for the BO roo over Silver Laced wyandotte hen, the Paler chicks with yellow chickdown will be the Males, the one with a light orange color will be females.. basically sex links but harder to spot since Buff orps are not trully Orange colored at hatch compared to Rhode Island Reds, which is used for red sex links..

Sorry ... I don't mean to be a complete NEWBIE or sound like an idiot, but what do you mean by "yellow chickdow"?

After checking them a little closer I found that:

The oldest one (4 days old) ... is a light yellow color with a very small black marking on the head.
The other 2 yellow ones are darker but not really an orange, just darker and they both have black and brown markings on there heads.
The last one is Black with just a little brown around the eyes.

Thanks :)

spotting the difference or sexing BO roo x Silver Hen chicks its going to be kind of hard.. but its possible.. the males will have yellow chick down like the light sussex chick..

and the gold females will have a shade similar to normal buff orp chicks..

here is a link of a similar cross, except instead of Buff Orp there is a RIR, but both females are the same, silver laced hens and Barred rock hens. again the Buff orp male will produce less intence colored females but the males will be as yellow as shown on the link:
