I hear ya! I've been waiting 28 long days for my Silkie to hatch out five duck eggs for me. I've never had anything hatch so it's a big deal, and especially big because I've been wanting ducklings for a long time.

I work out of the house 5 days out of 7 and wouldn't you know it?? This weekend I'm out of town!! Aargh! It's an important event that takes me away though, so I'm just hoping Silkie mamas are as good as I've heard and that I arrive back to a wonderful surprise and five healthy ducklings.

It's a rule of hatching - they're more likely to hatch if you can't watch...

And watched eggs rarely hatch when you're watching.

It's like this hidden rule.

Also the other rule: They hatch when you least expect them - several hatches, two days early lately - hello SURPRISE!!!

Worst part of the first hatch you DO get to see is not being able to help...

It's excruciating not being able to do anything for HOURS when you are RIGHT THERE!!!

But it's important not to help, and it's wonderful to watch, too.

Hope you get to go!!

OK I think I've convinced my mom to let me go see them this weekend

If my son sent me a letter like that he would be getting to sit there and watch those babies hatch! my little guy is 18 months though so all he says is chickenzz eggs and points to the incubator and says babiezzzz

gotta love the young ones and chickens.

Yeah I don't think my mom doesn't understand why I like chickens so much and why it's so important to see the new generation of chicks. She doesn't even like chickens! She thinks they are nasty because they "leave feathers everywhere, poop, have lice, etc." True, but why does that matter?!

and not all chickens have lice.

Exactly! Sure, two of the young pullets we got from someone had lice, but we dusted them and they don't have any now!

She would freak out if any chickens were in the house; she even gets mad when our Cockatiels are out of their cages, because "they will get feathers everywhere and they will poop on the floor, couch, etc...."

I don't get it, really. We bring our chickens in the house all the time at my dad's house. We even raised the twp pullets in my bedroom!(in a brooder box)
