First Hatch, Due Febuary 25. Who's with me?

I'm here! Lost my marker for this thread. I'm UBER EXCITED about LOCKDOWN coming up. I'm also nervous about it. We go on lockdown on tomorrow afternoon... no?

I sure hope that the chickies make it! I already have their feed and feeders and started working on a new coop and brooder. We have awesome weather down here, it's in the 70's and holding.

QUESTION. I went and got a lamp for the brooder. I saw that some people were getting RED and the first red one I saw at TSC, i grabbed it. I got home and saw that they were 250W!! Isn't this TOO HOT for them? I might go back and get a lower wattage one, or return it altogether. I still have some of the OLD SCHOOL light bulbs and I'm thinking that a regular 100 watt bulb might work. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

So sorry to hear that you lost one, but at least you know they are growing and developing in their shells. Yay for almost having chicks! Remember to post pics!

I love the red 250 watt bulbs, I successfully brooded 2 different batches of chicks with them and never had any problems. All you have to do is either raise or lower the lamp, just watch the babies-they'll tell you! Good luck!!

I would isolate it and see how it does. I had one like that who was really bad off; I had to put him down. But perhaps you will have better luck with this one! Maybe he will be tough.

Agreed with the poster above - the 250 should be fine, just start it out a little higher. Easy way to tell - if all the chicks are huddled under the light, lower it. If all the babies are up against the edge, as far away from the light as they can get, raise it. If they're running all over the place with little regard to the light, you've got it right!

I am also due around the 25th for chickies - good luck to you on your first hatch! May all of your eggs pip and zip quickly...

I candled tonight and I had one egg with a blood ring. That brings my count down to 33. ACK! I am so tempted to look in the egg (Crack it open and all) but after the last time... I have second thoughts. Air cells have DOUBLED in size since 02/13. Some are a little bit on the small size, but since there was still movement in there, I left them in.

COUNTDOWN begins TOMORROW evening for those of us hatching on the 25th? CORRECT?
