Chick grit will help prevent pasty butt by helping the chicks digest their food properly. Under natural circumstances, the mother hen would be showing the chicks around the grounds and they would be eating bits of dirt and grit as a natural part of their diet.

My wife had to run to town and she was able to grab some before the feed store closed.

No, don't put it in the bator, no need. The chicks are hatched with a good supply of all the nutrition they need from the absorbed yolk for about 48 hours although getting them into the brooder sooner than that is generally best. You can move them as soon as they are dry, usually within a day.

4 more have hatched since the last update. I'm so glad they are hatching. I was sure that I had screwed up the temps and humidity that I had killed them all. Glad to see that it hasn't been a waste of life or time. Still have a few more to go. Hope to see them by the end of the day. We will post some pics this evening.

We now have 10. We had 11, but one apparently wasn't ready to be moved. It was too weak and got in to the water and drowned. We still have one more that might hatch yet.
