first incubator in the mail, wondering if anyone ever used this kind

Do you have an area where the temperature stays more consistant. Like a basement. Also, in my experience preset thermostats work best if other factors remain constant or with only slow changes, such as outside air. A sudden change in temperature may take too long for the incubator to compensate. Your first "test" hatch should provide some insightful info as well. Have fun!!!

Yea I didnt think of that, Im probally going to set aggs on sat, and see how it goes. Thanks everyone for the suport and help. I have been posting on craigslist close to me tring to find eggs. I got 4 eggs in the last 3 days. I would like like 2 dozen, but dont want to get shipped eggs, because it wouldnt be a good test.

The issue of insulation (or lack there of) is just what I was getting at. If you know that your temps fluctuate where it is kept and see similar fluctuations in the bator, that's no good. Definitely try to find a nice consistent spot for placement. Its great that you have some eggs for testing. It's also a great idea to find local eggs versus putting in a big investment on your first test hatch. For all its questionable features, watch it work out just fabulous for you! *Fingers Crossed*

It looks a little like an older metal brower the design and all

there is another breeder close to me it is all he uses to hatch chicks every spring he does really well with it

I couldn't find a manufacturer's name for you but I did find incubators exactly the same as this for sale on eBay UK and from P&T Poultry also in the UK. The ones they sell do have the ability to adjust the temperature. They say: "The unit is generally pre-set at 37.5C however the unit does have a temperature adjustment dial inside the blue top cover to alter this for other uses (left to add temp or right to lower temp). "

Yea when I saw it it did remind me of the old brower top hatch can styles. Hahaha my first bator was one of those browers that is one reason I bought one of these red things we shall see how it does I wish the person who started this thread could chime in.

I have a similar one in gray, except it comes with a transparent cover so you can see in it...

I have several issues with it, and would hesitate to use is as an incubator (I use mine as a hatcher, as I stagger incubations).

Temperature is difficult to keep stable (even in my spare room which is currently 20*C). Humiditiy is a b*tch to keep stable... it will hardly keep at 55% for three days for lockdown without drying out - even (over)filling both channels and having paper towels in there... nothing worse than coming in from work, or first thing on a morning to have your humidity reading 20%, when a few hours ago there was loads of water and it was reading a steady 50%!!!

I don't know about yours, but the lid isn't rigid, and it is a fiddle to get on and off quickly. Despite being "forced air" temperature and humidity drop like a stone and take ages to come back up when the lid os off for a couple of minutes.

Like I say, I use mine as a hatcher... but I couldn't bear to use is as an incubator!
