First Night in the Coop...Tonight?

I live in Latham right now, my husband is occupying our house up in Syracuse and I hear they've actually seen snow in the summer months LOL So I imagine when it's pretty cold in the winter time. What do you raise Featherz?

Just another lesson learned in all this: If they're young enough to be seriously harmed (or die) because of a VERY cold night (freezing or below) you may want to put 2 heatlamps in the coop.

I bought a new bulb that was warmer and put it in the coop in the morning. I came back 4 hours later and it had blown out (something was wrong with it) leaving them with no heat source. I freaked out because it was about 40 degrees that day and, at 4 weeks, I wasn't sure how they'd do. If that had happened over night (below freezing) and they had gone without a lamp for 6-8 hours, I fear I may not have been as lucky.

So, I know for me, in the future, I'll have 2 lamps if they're super young and it's around freezing at nights. If one bulb blows and you only have 1 light...it could be disaster the next morning. Just another lesson learned :)

Well, the last two nights have been 32 degrees. A sudden cold snap. I haven't rigged a heat lamp in their coop yet so I put two blankets over the top of the coop, opened the vent at the top of the roost about 3 inches, and they were fine.
But will put a heat lamp in the coop during winter. I live in So. Illinois. My chicks are about 6 weeks old now, growing good. They love meal worms for a treat.
