Please! I have been working on meshing my original small flock of 18wk olds with my newbie 9 week olds. Babies have been in a temporary coop and run sharing a wall with the main run for a month and three days ago I started free-ranging them together with some squabbles. Today I let them all out and when it was time to rest much to my shock the babies went into the main coop with the older hens and rooster. They all spent the day coming in and out of that coop despite the little ones coop being open. So it's going to be dark soon and I'm not sure if the little babies are going to follow the big girls into the coop or not.

What is the best thing to do if they don't follow them in? Should I open the coop door and put them directly on the roost? Scoot each one through the door and let her get on the roost herself or just crack the door and take a chance they might sleep on the floor tonight? Help! I don't want to disturb a (so far) mostly peaceful transition!

With my chicks some roost and some sleep on the floor. They seem to go on the roost when they're ready but you can put them up there if you want too. I don't think it's a big deal if they sleep on the floor as long as you're coop is locked up at night so predators can't get them. :)

Thank you, their coop is inside a completely closed in and locked run so I left the door cracked and hopefully they'll at least go inside and roost when they're ready. I hope the big girls don't poo on them.

Forgot to mention that they've been roosting in their temporary coop for weeks now.

Update: Well it was dark and I went to check on them and they were piled up in the corner of the run so I chanced it and gently put each one up on the second roost. Fingers crossed they stay there and can find their way out safely in the morning!

I'm sure they will! They just have to learn. Mine would never go in at night at first either and it drove me nuts but after a couple days they began going in by themselves.
