Last night was the girls first night in their coop outside! I'm so happy to have them out of the house! We live in Rhode Island and it's finally warming up, I think it went down to around 60 after an almost 80 degrees day. They're around 8 weeks old, would I have to bring them back in if it dips low, like in the 30's or 40's?

It is nice to have your house back, isn't it? They should have enough feathers by now to allow them to regulate their body temperature, so I wouldn't worry about cooler nights.

Welcome to BYC!

I agree with Sumi here that they should do well on some chilly nights. But if you are having a real cold snap and you notice them looking cold, you could take the heat lamp out for them on those really cold nights. Use it at night only. Not enough to really heat them, but just enough to take the chill off. Make SURE to permanently attach the lamp to the wall or ceiling and do not rely on the clamp. You don't want to start a coop fire.

Enjoy your freedom from babies in the house and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! It is nice to get them out of the house isn't it, bet they like all the extra room! X3, they should have plenty of feathers and after a few days be used to the cooler weather.

Mine went out at 5.5 weeks. Heat lamp the first couple of nights, but they weren't even using that side of the coop..they preferred snuggling close to the closed pop door. We have yet to have a night time temp above 38 degrees....we've had snow, rain and wind. I swear I could hear the sound of them feathering out. They're now 11 weeks old and thriving. Yours should be just fine as well.
