Well, thank you all very much. More or less verified what I already knew. :-( I hope they all prove to be good layers, because they're costing me $5.60/month each to feed fermented soy-free organic, put me double over the number of birds I'm allowed to have, and are not the breeds I planned to build my small flock with. At six-months, I'll have a feed investment of $28.50 and I paid $3.50 for each chick (3-4 weeks old; farmer could not give an exact date).
Live and learn! I try very hard to buy local, but that's not always best.
