First predator!

I won't be leaving our coop open anymore either....sorry about your loss. I know I was lucky! So far we have not seen any more of it. No evidence that it has been back.

We had our first predator this morning, a possum, stuck in the aviary netting over the kennel panels surrounding a hutch on our back patio. i have three bantam salmon faverolles in there, sweetest little birds in the world. i've seen this possum before, hanging around our pens and chased it off. All of our pens are right off our patio and i have xmas icicle lights on all the time at night, so it is bright out there. But coming up right onto the porch was mighty bold.

As much as i hate killing anything, my husband shot it (about 20 times) with a pellet gun, directly to the head. We have one of those Daisy pump action pellet guns. i know if we had let it go it would have just come back. It's hard being a chicken owner, but we have to do the difficult deeds to keep our kids safe. i am very glad your girls are okay. You might want to set a trap for the possum. It will be back. Ours kept coming back until we killed it.

I know how you feel....after the adrenaline wore off I felt guilty for hitting the possum...I know that sounds stupid but I love animals and hate the thought of hurting anything. They are only doing what their nature tells them to by searching out food....but it aint gonna be my girls and that is what I have to remember!
