If I'd not ended up with accidental males, I would have opted for a Brahma.I like having a nice, polite rooster around and have zero tolerance for a mean one.
I actually enjoy the crowing and I like seeing the flock interacting as well as having the opportunity to hatch my own chicks.
Is he a Dark Brahma?
While there are never any guarantees with live animals, Brahma roosters have a great reputation for being laid back and non-aggressive. My in-town rooster was a Light Brahma and he had the loveliest crow -- deep-toned and pleasant on the ear.

I guess I am so inexperienced with chickens. I love my girls. Roo is trying to mate with all of them. Only one tolerates it. The girls have gotten picky with each other since he started displaying male behavior..is that normal and will it settle down?I like having a nice, polite rooster around and have zero tolerance for a mean one.

Do I need different feed for a rooster? Separate coop? I am so ignorant. I studied for months before getting chickens but it has been a steep learning curve.I like having a nice, polite rooster around and have zero tolerance for a mean one.

Many folks with a rooster feed an All Flock or Flockraiser feed, and provide separate bins for grit and oystershell, all free choice. That way the laying hens can get their needed calcium and the rooster (and any future chicks) can avoid it.Do I need different feed for a rooster? Separate coop? I am so ignorant.
