First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

While I would love to see the Oregon Trail Chicken Drive I think the distance might make pony rental cost prohibitive, otherwise it is a sound plan! Think about the commercial chicken trucks. How many dog kennels can you beg borrow and steal. You can load them on a landscape trailer or in the back of trucks with quite a few birds to a kennel.

Hello again, I've been MIA for a while, as there was nothing all that exciting to report in my chicken life. Some nice eggs, but sadly no broodies. I continue to miss "Ms Broody" who died last winter.

But, I got my meat chicks in yesterday's mail and am excited to raise my second batch. I also wanted to give a big THANK YOU to Jessica, as I used Jenks hatchery, which I learned about from you. All 27 chicks arrived bouncing around and healthy as can be. What I nice change from the last time when the chicks arrived 2 days late, with dead chicks in the box and several dying within the first day out.

I need to do some reading to catch up with everyone's goings on. Below are some pictures of the new chicks, plus a picture of my baby bunnies who were born about 10 days ago. Nothing to do with chickens, but they are too cute not to share.

You are correct, they are too cute not to share! :) um, what do you do with them? Sell them as pets around easter?

Yeah that wouldn't work well - the Chicken Drive thing. So far we have used large boxes and can haul about 6 per box. I do have a large dog kennel and my neighbor has a rabbit hutch we can borrow. The problem is getting them all into the darn transport item. They are not as tame as my personal chickens and catching them is the word for a female dog. It is absolutely exhausting. I was absolutely drenched in sweat after catching yesterday's 10. We grabbed the ones that let us but the rest have to be chased with a net. I'd love to just corral them all into something and drive away.

Glad you are back Morrigan and that Jenks was a success! Adorable chicks and bunnies!!

They are meat rabbits. So like my meatballs, I adore and raise them until dispatch day. I fear some of my visiting friends may think less of me for it, as they can't understand how I can kill anything, much less a bunny. (As an aside, although none of it was easy, I found it harder to dispatch the CX than the rabbits last year). I try to explain factory farming vs. self-sufficiency to them and they say they get it, but in their eyes I can see that they really don't.

Jessica -- I just got caught up with the thread. Congrats on your new business. Good luck getting all the chickens "smuggled" over and hope the tractor set-up goes well.

Ralphie -- Love the Bert pictures and stories. I always wondered if CX rooster would be too heavy to to "it".

I'm really enjoying all the pictures and stories here.

Glad for updates on Pearl as well.

Jessica - I had to put some roosters in a separate pen so I caught six after sunset off the roost and the other three in the morning when I fed them. Are you able to do that at the farm? It makes it a lot easier. My chickens are not tame and never let me hold them.

I get it! Dad did that for a time when I was a kid. :) I couldn't imagine what else you would do with that many! lol
