First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Linda: Wonderful!! So glad to hear that you are well. I have been thinking about you! Get back to those chickens soon. No one takes care of them like you!

UPDATE:
We smuggled home 30 more pullets today for a grand total of 71 now at home. We have maybe 40 or so left to go. It is wonderful watching them see the grass for the first time. It warms my heart!

These sweet girls were so afraid of us and acted like we were trying to kill them when we captured them to leave. By the next day, they all run to us, squatting and letting us pet them. One even tried to fly up on my hubby's shoulder. I think we have made them very happy!!

The chicken tractor frame is up! We still have to attach everything and firm it all up. I will take pics when we get a break in the rain. It rained the whole day while we were working on it.

I think that I just found out what one of my rescue roosters is. On the right of this page there are reviews and I saw a roo that looks exactly like him as a Chantecler.

Would you all say that is what he is? I just put him on Craigs and Facebook looking for a new home.

Oh, I forgot. I'm pretty sure Sunny is laying again! I keep finding a lovely egg under my broody silkie. I've found Sunny in there with her and no one else would be allowed without a whole lot of silkie yelling. They are perfect and do great for rounding out a dozen eggs for sale!

Can I say something?! That ayam cemani roo got busy with my ladies awful fast! 3 eggs just hatched out of blue eggs, and they are BLACK!!

So now I guess I'm working on a fibro egg layer project.

And I think one of these runner ducks is a drake gah!!

So. Narragansett turkey or what breed? I need to get my meat chickens asap if I'm going to do it, my bf is wanting to till up the back raised garden bed that currently 2 muscovies and and 7 chickens are on..

Narragansetts are lovely and I would recommend them anytime. I just culled my N Tom today and his 1/2 Narragansett / 1/2 blue slate son. So hard to do but needed to be done. And 5 chickens... I am 'meated' out. Hate this part of being a good caretaker of my flock.
One of my meatie MG hens has gone broody! Surprised me, I thought they had it bred out of them. I love it when hiss and peck, I think they'll be great protective mommas. I put a dozen more MG eggs into lock down tonight. I thought I'd killed them off in a moment of senility last week I added them to my Hatcher a week early with some other eggs -stared at them for a day and a half thinking something's not right here but I can't remember what (between my flock and my paying job I have NO time to think :sp ) then checked the dates through the tiny window and did the math. Crap! Oops I mean brown steamy stuff! One died but the rest seem on target so fingers crossed...

Hey all. Can't see the screen to update. Feeling great. Walking very good. Day two of rehab today. I'm blessed with good people all around

that's good to hear. Hang in there, your chickens need you :)

All is so cool!!!

Jessica I think that rooster looks related to nameless. I sure wish I could find nameless a home. However, finding a home for a rooster is a million to one shot. Chicken people are sexist against roosters.

All those chickens would be so fun. I wish sunny could meet Bert, I am thinking they would get along so well and make such nice frogs.

WB Linda, be careful. glad you're on the mend, now just be careful and avoid the gators.

Turkeytruff Culling is so hard to do. I have to do it and dread it. Please be aware even hinting at moist brown steaming smell stuff can get you double secret probation. As a parolee of double secret probation I can tell you stories about the stuff.

I have made some turkey choices, I hope they are final. I am not keeping any blue/splash Jakes. Besides the one with a bad attitude I have another that is less aggressive and smaller. BUT he does not impress me much. So JJ gets to stay, as if that was ever a question. I have a large jake that is semi-docile and kind of slips under the radar. He is large and lavender/ self blue. He is almost white in his self blue a very regal looking bird if you just stand and watch him. The tips of his tail and wings are the color of angel wings. I checked them against my own wings to be sure they matched. His halo is not as shiny as mine though.

I am finally thinking I might live through this disease.

I got 27 eggs yesterday from my 30 girls! So excited about that . We went on an excursion last night to the Orrock Store to buy a lottery ticket When we left I drove to the coop with my wife in the car with me to lock Bert up. She has not seen him put to bed in the main coop. She laughed so hard at this big wadding bird that has to be followed every step of the way to bed like a toddler and complaining the whole time. Then with his jumping into the coop and onto his "roost". She thinks he has an ugly butt. I just hope he gets feathers back on it. Of course, realistically what are the chances he will be alive next winter.

I am going to start putting up pens soon. I might even take the snow plow off the bobcat and put the post auger on it today. Maybe try to drill a hole.

Well, we lost 2 chicks. My daughter has been crying for an entire day. Both of the ones we lost had huge belly buttons. I have no idea if this was part of it, but sadly they didn't make it through the first night.

Cricket is thriving though, and I have never seen a chick that loves humans as much as she does. She can already escape the brooder (something not done by any of the birds until they were 2 weeks or older) and comes looking for people. Even before the other two died, she escaped and came looking for us. She has already figured out that, uncomfortable or not, if she screams, we all come running and snuggle her. Guess who is nestled in my hair right now....

I have no idea how I was able to only leave the store with 3... must have been divine intervention. Ralph, since you have angel wings and a halo, did you have something to do with it?!

Jessica- I am so glad Sunny is sneaking in the nest box and laying! Pearl snuck in yesterday and laid a perfectly normal egg!
I bet your pullets are so thankful to you for smuggling them to the grass! Funny how just moving them has made them squat for pets and come running when they see you! I love when chickens run to greet me.

Ralph- Anymore Diamond eggs? Only the 3? I hope they all hatch out for you! And it seems the rest of your gals are really stepping it up! Good luck with your turkey processing!

We made a new area for the meatballs! I am so excited for them. I think I may also have Clyde brood the turkeys in the same area. There is a snuggly little nesting spot (not by design, but by Clyde trying to sneak a new nest). I think I will let her roll with it.

At this point, I don't remember all I have read and wanted to comment on. My coffee did not magically appear this morning. Maybe the aliens will send me a maid who does these things for me.

Turning yucky outside, more like March should be.

I went out to release Bert from his cell and checked on al the birds. I looked the turkeys over and I am very comfortable with my choice of Turkey Daddy. He really is a good looking bird, just such a under stated personality he kind of flies under the radar.

I am thinking I will give JJ one of the self blues and Ethel and the other two to the new still to be named Turkey Tom. Maybe I will call him angelwings.....That does not seem to keep in the tradition of using men's uncles names.

How often do I have to put the tom with the hens to keep the eggs fertile? If I put them in the pen once a week is that enough?

I hate to lock up JJ just because Ethel likes to hide her eggs.

BTW Bert was upset again, which is becoming the norm. I grabbed him and lifted him off his "roost" again and set him on the steps. He really does not like that, but if I don't lift him off he will take an hour to leave the coop and all the hens will be in there eating and making a mess.

Updating. PT's coming this morning and will get me started on a schedule. Feeling good except for SIL. Resisting chickens.
