First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

I don't like that day either. My husband has made the comment a couple of times in the last week that he really hates killing all those nice chickens. I think he's hinting that he wants me to do it or something. He must be crazy!

Xanax or Valium would work but if you don't have some of either of those, Vodka works too and you don't need a prescription. LOL!

My husband has been making similar comments... I will require a large amount of Vodka if he decides to not cull!

We're decided to do a team effort. I have 3 experienced ppl to show us the ropes, so come the time, we'll be having 5 ppl to go through 30 chickens (if 2 of my hens don't start getting on the ball laying again that is, or if I decide to cull the 3 ayam cemani and haffie roos) at one time. They want chickens to eat in return for the work, seems very reasonable.

It is the circle of life and it is hard.

But it is better to raise them, give then a good albeit short life than to be raised in a cage, It is also good for the family/kids everyone, it teaches us where are food comes from and that a life (either plant or animal) has to die for us to live.

A good drink/beer afterwards and a laugh about the chickens and the funny stuff they did helps. It also helps to give thanks for their sacrifice in whatever manner you believe most fitting.

And I know many people cannot understand it, I will eat them,. but I do love them too.

I got some Cornish pullets at auction.going to cross my extra cemani rooster on to make dark meat roasters. My spring project, summer eating.

Tell me more, what breed?

More dark meat is my dream. I love my CornishX's but the breasts are too big, we like dark meat. I would still try to raise some to sell with big breast, BUT I like my legs and thighs.

Ralphie, do you have any guineas? I haven't tried them personally, but I have heard they are dark meat. I'm planning on trying to hatch some next spring.

I will consume a good amount of Vodka even if my hubby does the deed. After eviscerating all those chickens after he does that part, I need something to take care of the body aches in my shoulders, back and hands, plus something needs to drown the chicken odor from my nose and the emotional realization that the next time I go to the tractor, it will be empty.

This time I will actually plan ahead. I can't eat that night after processing but the next day, I am starving and need steak! It takes several days for me to shake the feelings and then I can eat chicken again. It's a good thing those chickens need to rest for a few days before eating.
