Crud. Code enforcement came by yesterday and I got a summons.

I explained that the first freezer camp send off is this weekend and every weekend until I'm down to my 12 laying chickens and 6 ducks I plan on keeping.

It's going to court due to the 1 neighbor that actually USED to be our friend for about 6 years that started complaining then calling code enforcement. He's not even home very much, so we're sure he just calls code enforcement just to call.

Guess who already had a lawyer lined up months ago? Me. Guess whose neighbor that lives even closer to the animals and compost and has the same landlord is coming to testify on my behalf in court? Guess whose neighbor has a dead tree over our garage still? Guess which neighbor spraying pesticides on their lawn which killed both my beehives is going to get sued? Guess which neighbor is going to be run out of the neighborhood?

Sorry, feeling ranty. I'm pretty mad. My roosters have had crow reduction surgeries that cost $150 each. They live in my basement in special sound muffled housing my bf built me. My chicken won a blue ribbon at the fair and we eat well.

Oh the neighbor also got 5 big trout from us last year on agreement to smoke them for us and we split it 50/50 & no smoked trout has appeared, but we got ourselves a smoker. Some people, huh?! Agh!!!

I feel ya DK. I'm not sure if you were here when I was having my issue with my neighbor. We had a visit from the Dept of Agriculture, the Sheriff and the lovely letter from the County telling us to get rid of all of our chickens down to a certain number or we would pay a big fine every day. However, the county never actually came out and saw what we had. Our neighbor just sent them photos.

Anyway, the Dept of Ag loved what we were doing and sent copy of his report to the county and the only thing him and the sheriff had to say was that we were over the numbers allowed. But then we moved the chickens to our rented pasture as we always intended to do.

My neighbor built a lovely privacy fence but also had battle with the county because she has too many horses, a barn on the property line and customers that come to her house which is against code. She who lives in glass houses should not throw stones. Anyway, her house is on the market and she hasn't bothered us but she still has too many horses and customers coming over.

As long as she leaves us alone, we will do the same. That was always our way of life.

When we did the 60, I did not have to kill any. My son and son in law knew I was attached to me and said they would do it for me. It helped a lot, once they were headless it was easier for me.

Thanks Holm. It seems to be that the majority of people "rest" the birds 3 days. At least that's the most common number I keep coming across.
