My babies are now 4 weeks old! Does that make them teens? I don't know, but I am really enjoying myself! I weighed 4 randoms today and we are averaging 2 1/2 pounds. Maybe we are growing a bit slower than the broiler chart than I am looking at, but we are good because we are pasture grown and get free ranging time! Something a commercial broiler will never get and this is why I am doing this.

Here's one of today's videos. I couldn't help myself and you will see why i the next post.

One more that I just couldn't resist! I love that a few of my girls (laying hens) can stand along side the meaties. A few need to be pecked to leave them alone. Still love my girls but don't put up with them messing with my chicks!

My CX are 5 weeks tomorrow. I can't believe it!

A friend of ours stopped by this week that didn't know we had chickens. He was very impressed at our 41 happy, healthy chickens running around the yard! He was most impressed with my Cornish X because he had previously worked at a chicken plant! Where he worked they raised 350,000 Cxs every 8 weeks. He said that the chickens they raised never walked 5 steps without laying down! He was super impressed that my CX were running around the yard, chasing bugs, scratching and acting like chickens. He didn't even know they could do this.

I feel very good right now and love, love my chickens! They make me so happy and excited about dinner in a few weeks.

Jessica, what a testament to what a great job you're doing. It makes me mad to hear about lazy, dirty stinky birds. It's a management issue

Thank you Linda!

I admit that they aren't perfectly clean. I move them 2-3 times per day on the grass but their feet still get dirty. Then they are so excited to see me that they jump on each other's backs and get dirty feathers. They don't stink though since i move them so often and they love their free ranging time!

I did my weekly random weights today. They are 5 weeks old. Weights ranged between 3 1/2 and 4 lbs. According to the broiler feed chart that I found on this site, we are just a couple of ounces shy of commercial recommendations. I am certainly okay with this because I really didn't want the freakishly fast weight increases that cause health problems. I feel that we are right on track!

They won't pose for pics next to the tennis ball anymore, so I will just have to grab the occasional photo opp that I can and the videos that I just can't resist.

So DH finally gave me the "ok" to order a set of birds!

He wants to try only a handful (15 or so... but I might "mistakenly" order closer to 20). Thanks for posting your experience on this thread... I'm going to use it for some reference once my birds come.
