Bunch of questions:
Morrigan, I put mine out at a week, but in a brooder/tractor. I have a couple 4x4 ft boxes with no bottom or wire bottoms and doors cut into them. I cut a hole in the "roof" and put a heat lamp in it and covered it with a plastic tub. I then just lock the door to keep them in the brooder at night. I kept the water in there to start so they had a reason to go in, and gave them treats in the evening. They will do anything for food. Maybe you could make something like that in your pen. I am a firm believer in getting CX's outside as soon as possible to lesson heart, lung and leg problems.
Holm: Did you have a bad experience with the CX's? Why would you not raise them again?
Duoblekindness, I am sorry, I double over in sympathy pain for your semi-capon......ewwwww
Jessica, can you post your chicken pictures here? Do you mind if we get slightly of CX's on this thread? I love my CX's, which is obvious as mine are 12 weeks old with no end in sight. I like just talking to the people on this thread. However, I understand if you want the thread to remain purely CX's.
I had a few more questions for some here, but alas at my age my memory is short. ( not that it ever was long)
I have only one Roo left to send to camp, he is so sneaky I may just let him live. I had to resort to the 22 in the head trick to get the last 2. We ate one of my non-CX's last night and were disappointed. The legs and thighs were extremely tough, but the breast were great. I rested him 2 days, I am not sure why. I am wondering if my little hunt for him got his adrenaline was pumping. He knew I was after him and was running from me before I could get a safe shot at him.
I have a real excuse to not process my CX's for a while. I need bigger bags from Nadya. I could hardly get my 7.5 pound Dixie rainbow in the bag no way my meatballs will go into the bags. I may have to cut a bigger doorway in their brooder. They have to get done on their knees and wiggle through the door. It is too low and too narrow for them.
And on a happy note, One of my CX's crowed a real crow this morning! It was so cute. Then he attempted to fly. He went about 2 feet high and 4 feet in length, a real athlete.
