First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Swarming must be a cx trait lol. My layer chicks come up to me, but they will move out of the way. The cx just waddle/run over and jostle for position. I really think it takes me longer to get in the coop and to the feed containers than anything else. Quite a few have had fermented feed heads lol.

My poor remaining 4 babies have not come out of their brooder since Sunday night. They refuse to leave it.

I even cleared away the snow and made an area for them to be in. They still refused.

I dumped some shell corn on the ground and a little ways into the door to coax them out. No Luck...

I think they want to move to the tropics. I am thinking I may have to move them into an open building I have to get them moving again.

I opened the lid to their brooder to look at them and see if they were Okay. They all 4 looked up at me as if to say " Shut the lid, Stupid you're letting the heat out'!

I guess they are not really into these temps.

I am so glad to know that I am not the only one that can't walk through my CX's without being swarmed. I tried to explain my plight and even showed videos but no one really seemed to understand the crazy. Not to mention the peck bruises on my legs from them. No fermented feed for my cx. I just can't move quick enough for them. However, I love them and will continue raising them. They truly delight me.

Ralph: I'm with your CX. It's cold. Keep the door shut!! What? Were you born in a barn or something?

22 degrees here this morning! Never has been this cold this early here! Still plan on butchering 5-6 of the crosses this weekend to make more room for the smaller ones.

-8° with windchill between -15° and -25° here. Our plan had been to butcher this weekend, but now I am just holding for any day next week over 40°.

I ordered my spring chicks yesterday (15 cx, 4 polish, 3 silkies, and one bantam frizzle cochin), and think I'll stagger my second group of cx behind them. No more late fall/winter birds for me lol.

We rescued a kitty that was half dead and ice cold. All her bros and sisters were dead. so she is on milk replacer.

Cute Kitten...

Come on CoHomestead !! Do not let a little chilly weather stop you....

I forced my 4 CX's outside today. They fought me the whole way. I had to lift the middle section of the brooder and actually catch them and move them outdoors. They squawked worse than those I sent to freezer camp. I wanted to make sure they were ok. They did not drink any water, but did nibble at a little corn and scratch.

It reminded me of when my kids were teens and I tried to get them up before noon. They were only out of the brooder for around 10 minutes then went back inside.

I hope they will be ok. I hate to have them starve.

My gosh! I thought 22 was cold! So early!

A friend sent me this! I have a tin sign in my shed that has a rooster stomping across the yard and it says that he dreams of a day when he can cross the road without someone questioning his motives! :)
