First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

So I have to plan ahead to make deviled eggs......This is a bad thing...

I am not a good planner. I am more of a when the mood hits me I do it person..

My eggs where not overly fresh, some of them were over 24 hours old!

Linda I apologize for making a huge mistake on your choice of C2H5OH.

I have had a bad day, everything I touched went bad.

I am doing taxes, not too fast but starting them, I hate doing taxes!

I have found a way to feel better about everything, I have decided to share my findings:

Any Questions?

BTW I hate that Minnesota has blue laws, I could run out before tomorrow! BTW I have plenty of milk and nesquik...

A pleasant warm feeling is beginning to appear!

I DESPISE DOING TAXES! Why, you ask? Because I always have to write a big check, even after writing big stinkin' checks to them every dang quarter. Sometimes I really miss the days when I got a paycheck and the taxes were just taken out for me. It was way less stressful back in those days.

See why I need Vodka? By the way, whatever drink you are making there looks like it has some yummy ingredients! You must have had a seriously bad day though if you are going to run out of Schnapps today. Of course, if you are doing taxes I totally get it!

I have begun integrating the rescue babies into the main coop with my older hens. They have been free ranging together since 5 weeks old and are now 15 weeks, nearly the hens size and 4 of them are roosters. Night 1 & 2 entailed my daughter, hubby and I grabbing them up and tossing them inside. The girls chased and pecked mildly but these guys are quick and big enough to fight back if need be. No one is getting hurt though. Last night we had gone to a movie and got back after dark. The girls were all in the coop, one of the babies (roo) was also inside on the roost and the rest were milling around the coop on the outside wondering what to do. We shooed them all inside pretty easily and they all settled in.

Soooo, after that I was feeling really good and thought "they are getting this". Tonight we went on out to coop everyone up and the babies just ran around like chickens with their heads cut off (er...that works on a meat bird thread, doesn't it). My daughter and I chased and grabbed them all up and tossed them in.

UGH! I hope this doesn't go on for too long. I really am not partial to chicken chasing! I probably look ridiculous with my long stick and garden rake running around trying to lead them in. (Have fun envisioning that one Ralph). Lol!

Well, okay, just so we have it straight.

Put a dozen eggs in the back of the fridge and let it alone. Keep replacing the dozen.

I saw a video on youtube about one fellow herding 10,000 ducks with a long pole (like a fishing pole) and a red bandana tied on it. They herd much easier than chickens. Why not tie a bandana on a long pole and see if it helps.

I'm retired and never have to file taxes again. My world is good. sigh

Hello Linda and other Pals of the Chicken,
How do you do it? I'm retired too and the devils in our government are taxing my withdrawals from my IRA combined with my SS monthly payments. If I did not make the withdrawals could not sustain myself and I do not come close to living lavishly by any means. 'Tis a big deal if I get to eat out once a week. I make a few paltry bucks with the surplus eggs engendered by the genetic experimentation but that really is a pittance. Any solace obtained comes from communing with you understanding chicken type folks and burying myself in the chicken enterprise. So what is your secret, if one may ask, as to how one pays no taxes? Any of you folks have any ideas? We must stick together or perish separately. That is all…
Neal, the Zooman

zooman I also am retired, and seem to pay, pay and pay...........

I have a very important question. It has returned to Artic temps here. We are again pleasantly below zero.

What I am looking at is building a sauna for my chubbies. They look cold out there. I was wondering if any of you could send me your chubby Suana plans. Thanks.

PS. Do you include a shower or dip after they sauna?

Our internet has been down!!! A huge wind storm took it out, then it snowed a foot and stayed below freezing. The "internet guy" finally fixed it... just in time for below zero temps and more snow!

Anyhow, yes, vodka fixes everything. But I am not particularly picky. If I do not have vodka, I will gladly consume whatever spirits are available.
Ralph, I love a little peppermint schnapps in my hot cocoa!

On the topic of hard boiled eggs. Fresh ones don't peel for *bleep* (that was for you Ralph

). I steamed them once, and ice bathed them. It seemed to help. I've also heard baking soda in the water helps. Haven't tried that one yet though. I will next time try the knife method! Those suckers should scoop out like a charm!

Jessica- It took Pearl 3 or 4 days to get the idea of where she was supposed to be and do once we put her with the big gals. Your chicken chasing evenings will be over soon, I imagine!

So, with the cold weather here is a funny story about my chickens:

It was beautiful out, minus the wind, before the snow. All the chickens left the coop and were doing what they normally do. It got chilly so they went under the deck out of the wind. Dusk came upon us and I went to lock up the gals. They were not in there. Not a single chicken was in the coop. All 8 were under the deck.
I figured I could lure them with scratch. They normally come running when they hear it shaking in the can. Nope. Not even a single budge. After about 15 minutes of sounding like a lunatic, "Come here girls! I've got some yummy scratch for you! Don't you want to come out and get warm?!" all in syrupy thick sweet voice, I resorted to a belly crawl under the deck. Mind you, the chickens love it under there. There is poop EVERYWHERE! There is barely enough room for me to slither in there. I had a stick. It was a 3 ring circus.

Once everyone made it to the coop, they have decided to never leave. Not even go outside in the run. They are boycotting snow.

I have the picture!

You crawling under the deck in your robe and nightie, covered in chicken poop, with the dogs wanting to lick your face waving a stick like a mad woman..... The visions scares me!

I have one question though, Are you wearing fuzzy "lucy" slippers or mukluks? The picture is not complete without this info.

My chickens have learned to ignore snow again. I did not let them out until late today because of the cold, I got bawled out for that! One chicken went through the human door, looked out the outside door, then turned around came back to the human door and wanted back in the coop. silly birds!

The CX's seem to not even notice the cold. They are doing great in their new coop. The CX is the only rooster that does not have frostbite on his comb. Dang Moisture!

The chilly winter hit us too here in Denver. The muscovies went into the cemani / bresse pen area today, it's more protected from the elements there.

I feel better from being sick. My dr said I had a bacterial infection, I was coughing up bloody mucus. We went to visit friends 4.5 hours away on the western slope and got back Saturday.

I really want bourbon this morning, but all I have is home made limincello. The snow is coming in sideways then freezing. Joy. Yesterday we mucked out all the coops thank goodness and put the poopy straw on top of the hugelculture project we started. My bf is still in bed (today off for vacation) & since he's taking another 4 days off around new years and we have many projects to complete, I'm letting him stay in bed. It's Monday, snowing and freezing.

BTW I'm going for my phd in chicken math. We cleared out my daughter's old bedroom and setting up both my new bators and the new brinsea brooder heater plate that can fit 50 chicks.

My bf is not enabling me at all ;) he's so excited about our garden this upcoming year. We planted a bunch of seeds already (I do have many indoor growing areas and my meyer lemons and night blooming jasmine are doing AWESOME).

The plan is to sell a bunch of seedlings at farmers markets and the chicken swaps starting in the spring to offset my ocd, chicken math phd program and gluten-free non gmo lifestyle costs.

I'm pretty sure I have the bf convinced to let me do 25 meaties 2-3 x next year, and a plucker is in our immediate planning. If MM wants to go in on ordering meatied together.. or I may go up to northern feeders supply to get them.

My plan for moving the bresse out to the muscovies area backfired, as now they are all in the same area together due to freezing sideways snow blizzard starting.
