I dare not get a heating pad, the DW is on the unreasonable warpath..


I stumbled across Ethel's nest today. The guinea hens have been using it. So it is a mix of guinea and turkey eggs. I do not know how many yet as I have not been able to sneak down and use it. The only reason I know the guineas are using it is we saw the guinea go into it after Ethel left and lay eggs. We know 2 used it...

So we are having a pleasant conversation about the eggs and what I plan to do with them...

She started it.... She asked " What are you going to do hatch them all in here?"

I said, innocently enough, " I don't know, I do not have a lot of incubator space open. and I need the hatcher this week."...

Out of the blue, she went ballistic yelling, " I know, another fricking incubator will suddenly appear while I am at work!"

I did not answer I hated to lie to her face and say No. BUT I hate to prove her right with one just appearing...What do I do?

Build it while she is home.....that way it won't appear while she is at work!

Sure, but you say this from under a chair!!!


My DW just went out to the nest to collect the eggs while I held and groomed Ethel. She is use to my holding her so nothing was amiss to her. The nest was in an old steel drum with both ends cut out. It has probably been laying in the woods there for 60 years or more.

My DW brought me back every egg, 10 chicken eggs, 7 Ethel eggs and 1 guinea hen egg, I have no idea what the second guinea was doing in the nest. We kept the turkey and guinea eggs and put the chicken eggs back. We figure something will try to hatch them. Even if it is Ethel she can raise another batch of Turkens. I just hope the guineas do not try to hatch them.

I am not sure the egg I got the other day is a Guinea egg now. It could just be a Turkey Ooops. But the last turkey oops I got had specks on it, this one does not and is the right shade.

Build it while she is home.....that way it won't appear while she is at work!

I am too afraid to try and build one. I just buy them..

Ralph I have never seen a turkey egg with no spots....

Good news for me I candled today have development except for3 I found in a nest in the straw bales. They look kinda like turkey eggs but not the right shape...

MM how r turkey eggs doing??

Ok, I'm cutting in on conversation, but I need help/advice from all you seasoned meat raisers out there (pretty please!!!)!!! One of my 3.5 week old CX was lethargic this morning which was very odd, as I'm taking their food away at night and have been VERY excited to see me in the morning. This afternoon, it was still lethargic when I went to fill the feeder for the voracious little buggers. Picked it up, and the crop is very soft, but large.... Sour crop, I'm guessing from Google research. No good. Tried to make it vomit (as is suggested for sour crop), but it hasn't worked...... So.... What do I do? I want to help it, but I do have to work 8 hours a day, so constant care is not an option... Any advice is much appreciated!

How much do you feed it during the day?

How far is the waterer from the feed?

Does the belly feel squishy?

I am not sure what to tell you. Try the sour crop stuff, but I found when they got in that condition, it is not good.

it is easier to keep them from that condition, If it passes, cut the gut open and see if you have a golden/yellow water gush out...

It could be Ascites.. That was the problems I had with my first batch, they tend to over eat and not get enough exercise if not forced to,

I had one like that that I saved. I tried to make her vomit. I kept her on the coffee table in the living room and watched like crazy pushing fluids as much as I could. I also kept massaging the crop. After hours of that, she pooped and out came a piece of rubber from my husband's racing tire. My theory is that it was stuck sideways and my massaging dislodged it enough to continue along through the digestive system.

Not sure if this would help in your chicken's situation but could have eaten something that is stuck.
