First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

I ferment feed as well, and my coop and chicks literally have NO smell. They also don't poop all of the time like I have heard other people saying. We have 50 in a relatively small area, they are only in it at night but there is no smell at all. Look into it! My chicks look gross though from swimming in the trough of wet feed...

Wow, 50 the? My 9 smell like what I imagine the warehouses of chickens at Tyson must smell like! Can't wait to try fermenting!

Why do you ferment your feed on CX's?

To me that is counter productive and expensive. When something is fermented you change sugars to alcohol, heat is a by product of the process. You are taking energy out of the feed. BY doing so you increase the protein percentage, not by adding protein but by taking away sugars and starches.

From what I have read from scientific sources, and there are very few real studies on fermented feed, the main "good" effect of fermented feed if there is any is in long term health and deals with parasites and maybe bacterial disease. CX's are not here for the long term. Most people process them at 6 weeks, even I who keeps them twice as long as most people only have them 13 weeks.

The health benefits of fermented feed if there are any do not kick in that fast. In fact by raising the protein level of the feed you are doing damage to the birds if you plan to raise them slowly, limiting feed to keep them a tad longer. I normally do not get involved in the Fermented feed argument, because the adherents to it treat it like a sacred cow religion type thing. Pseudo science is used with lots anecdotal evidence and very little if any real science.

I know some of the Fermented Feed advocates will go nuts over this which is why I will not respond again to this. There is no point to it. I am just saying in the case of CX's it makes no sense. BTW I have never had a smell problem with the CX's. They need enough space, if they have it the smell is no worse than any other chicken with the proper amount of space.

Ferment away, makes no diff to me.
