First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

@DesertChic we have a hot weather alert for this coming weekend. The closest weather station to me is predicting 118 degrees Sunday. Since that weather station is a couple hundred feet higher elevation than my location, I am expecting more like 120+. Looks like I will be shopping for a mister system the next day or two! Can't wait for July and August.

Quote: Unfortunately, we are entering the monsoon season. That means we have hot, humid mornings. When the heat wont let the air hold any more moisture, we have afternoon and evening thunderstorms, frequently classified as "microbursts". That means make sure everything is tied down, with STRONG ropes.

Hi Everyone! I logged in to find 70+ pages of posts to catch up on and a very nice PM from JRNash. <3

This thread continues to amaze me and hopefully help others in their meat chicken endeavors every day. I started this thread with only one intention, to share my experience raising Cornish Cross meatbirds. I was hoping for advice and to help others on their venture. I was determined to prove the status quo wrong on these birds. I think I got more than I ever bargained for with all of you.

So, with that said, the "oldies" in this group know that I purchased an egg business in Jan 2015 and have been literally busting my rear for the last year and a half to rebuild something potentially awesome! Is it awesome yet? Not entirely but the business is paying for itself, ie. chicken feed, cartons, pasture rent and the like. This business is NOT for the feint of heart for sure. Farming is expensive and the animals take a LONG time to produce. You have to be able to sustain yourself and remove all entertainment costs, fun, rest, vacations, shopping and anything remotely frivolous from your life. We were lucky enough to have other successful businesses that helped us through this time given that we were also willing to work 10-12 hour days 7 days a week!! So, as I sit here in my one pair of jammy pants that I probably haven't had time to wash in two weeks and my shirt with holes in the armpit and stains from farmwork, I share this post.

We have 600 pullets set to start laying soon. One group is 2 weeks out and the other is 2 months out. Once they are all laying sellable eggs we will possibly finally see the ability to start to pay off the debt incurred to start this business. We estimate that it will take at least another year to pay off the debt and start seeing some actual profit. How many people can give 2 1/2+ years to see results? My hubby and I are awesome (and completely crazy) if I do say so myself.

Now with all that craziness said, we are down to two chickens in the freezer and I have talked my hubby into some more meaties. I am so excited to raise some CX again. I love them to pieces! I will have some chicks here at the farm this year and I will again share my experience as before. Yay! I am so super exited.

Oh and Ralphie, I almost forgot, I am absolutely IN LOVE with my ducks and we plan on adding a whole bunch more later this year. Ducks have no way to look anything but happy as their chubby little bodies waddle around the pasture. Their quacks complete my day. I adore them. And yes, sandles are acceptable around them and if you drop food between your toes, they will get it. Heehee!

Metzer farms has broiler chicks for 90 cents per 100. I'm thinking hard about it.
Metzer farms is a fantastic hatchery!! I get my ducks from there and they were in perfect health and are wonderful today!! I didn't know they sold broilers so I can't back those up. Jenks Hatchery is Tangent Oregon is also fantastic for Cornish Cross!
