First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

They might try but, it is not likely to be successful..You would need him to stay around until the hens lay eggs and not pullet eggs...and by then he will be crowing like a banshee.

That's kind of a bummer, but if you want to breed them(and can't get a roo), there is AI.
That's not as practical with chickens as it is with other livestock. The second you collect from a rooster you're on limited time to get the semen to the hens before it starts dying off which isn't terribly long. I think after maybe 5-10 minutes it starts to die. And this has to be done 1-2 a week for decent fertility rates. In other livestock semen can be stored for a VERY long time. They have straws of semen who have been dead for well over 40 years.

Was going to breed them, but can't have the crowing. So yeah I can just stick to just neat birds.
What age to chickens begin to crow anyway?

Most of the heritage LF I have raised would start try'n to crow around 14 weeks.... we always started think'n about butchering fryers at 14-16 weeks of age too. They would remind you if you lost track of their age "Find your crow it's time to go"....

Yep I was going to kill them when they crowed anyway, would have ended up with cockerels one way or another!
