First Saturday Lime vs. Ag lime

We have used it in some form for decades. All the way beck to our dairy farm days.

Will barb lime hurt chickens if they ingest it somehow

Still no issues over here and they love to scratch down into their bedding

I layer barn lime > horse pellets > pine shavings to keep things dry and from getting too smelly.

From the First Saturday Lime website, their product is a combo of hydrated lime & citric acid that has been neutralized from giving a dangerous chemical reaction. But they don't exactly explain why it's better than barn lime, just that it's 'stronger'.

I would give the regular barn lime a try first - 50lb for $3.29 (TSC) vs. 20lbs of FSL for $30 (Amazon).

I got lucky and a Home Depot was clearing out FSL for 3.70 a 20lb bag, bought all 6 they had. Not sure why they were clearing them out because all the other stores were regular price 37.00

Barn lime is (generally) Calcium Carbonite. Basically ground limestone powder. Ag Lime is usually Dolomitic Lime, which is mostly Dolomite, essentially a bunch of calcium carbonite bound to some magnesium.

Quicklime is Calcium Oxide.

Each has their uses. Very little overlap. But more overlap between Barn Lime (fast) and Ag Lime (slow) for acid neutralization than "Quicklime", used primarily for concrete and some industrial processes (like steel manufacture).

"First Saturday Lime" is Calcite (a calcium carbonate form) plus a small amount of citric acid.
