First Saturday Lime

Question...

Can you use First Saturday Lime in your coop if you are doing a true deep litter method? Or does it defeat the purpose of DLM by killing off the good bacteria?

First Saturday Lime is suppose to help cut down on odors. It is a natural mineral. With warmer temps coming soon, I want to stay ahead.

I would imagine it's good then. I'm guessing it's a powder and won't increase the moisture then if it reduces bacteria and odor. Sounds like something I might want to add to my coops

There are 2 different types of lime, 1 can be quite caustic.
I think @oldhenlikesdogs knows the difference, I do not.

If your deep litter is stinky, something in the mix is off and not sure lime will really cure the cause of the odor.

It appears to be the right lime for use around animals.

I use barn lime around my birds. I use on the floors, on my poop board, and I use it in nestboxes to prevent mites, and I use it around my rabbits to help soak up that urine smell.

You can throw it into deep litter and make white wash out of it. Barn lime is a wonder cheap product.

Just make sure it's agricultural lime, and you know it's safe.

Hydrated lime, slake lime, or "burn lime"- This is pure white. Hydrated lime is very caustic, so the bag will have a warning on it. This is the kind of lime you use for white wash . This lime will burn you and your livestock. Do not use it on the floor. Do not breath it.

Agricultural lime, "ag lime", "garden lime", "barn lime" or dolomite- This lime is gray and can be used to spread on the floor of your barn. This is safe for you and your livestock. It will not burn.

Barn lime can be used for whitewashing. It's what they would use to whitewash the inside of our dairy barn each year.
