The neighbor who donated the eggs will be taking the baby Sat morning. Sure hope Leone does OK. Have to admit, I feel sorry for her. Guess I didn't think this thru very well volunteering her to set some eggs. Guess I should have just tried to break her from broody. Like my Mom always said--"hind sight is always 20/20."

I would talk to the neighbor about letting her raise the baby. They could take it at 6 weeks. 9
There are many perks to a hen raising the babies. They are healthier, they learn how to fit in with the flock.
Your hen and the baby chick will both be depressed and untrusting of people if you seperate them. Its just wrong.

It wouldn't hurt to ask. Let your neighbor know it's her chicken but let Leone raise it as she's depressed. That chick is most likely alone and crying anyway.

If any more hatch, be sure to keep one back this time.
 
Update---- Talked with the neighbor this morning & decided she would take baby & Mom home for awhile. She also has 8 or 9 chicks she hatched in incubator. They are 1 - 1 1/2 weeks old. She has them all together & will see how that goes. She made the move about 4:00 this afternoon. I haven't talked with her yet to see how things are going.

Hi everyone,
Leone came back home Tuesday evening & things are going pretty good. Of course some hen pecking going on but nothing major.
Now for the new news. Another one of the girls has gone broody & I put her in the cool basement in an elevated wire bottom cage last Friday morning---day 2 of her broodiness. Well, this evening I put her outside & within 10 minutes she was in a nest box clucking away. Setting her back in the basement tonight but could sure use some advise.

Keep trying every evening about an hour before roost time. Keep putting her back down in the basement until she stops going to the nest boxes.
When I have a persistent broody, I can tell that she isn't ready to come out of the breaker because she's still talking the talk. When she stops talking the talk, there's a good chance she's finally broken.
 
HOORAY!!!!! Terri, my latest broody , finally has her freedom!!!! It was so weird, she would be fine outside during the day but at bedtime, she was in a nest so off to the basement for the night. Last night she was on the roost with the rest of the girls & this morning out & about!!!!! Only took June 20th in basement a.m. till July 2nd p.m. Neighbor says her girls break after 2 days!! Guess mine just really want to be a Mama. I had an Ameracana/Easter egger that I had in & out of the basement 3 times a week at a time with just a couple days in between & then lost her & 3 others to a coon attack 2 years ago.
Thankful all seems to be well.
