Hi, I'm brand new to this website. Just bought 10 new chicks, all doing great except one. I've had them less than a week and noticed one with eyes closed, gunked up. Cleaned them with warm water, called Tractor Supply where I got them; they recommended terramyosin, which I thought was helping. Eyes are re-closed within several hours, chick just stands there helpless. Can anyone offer a diagnosis or help. I haven't seen anything that describes this condition. Thanks to all who can help

Last year, I culled my chick that had the same problem. I don't know if I did the right thing, but I was afraid it would spread to the other chicks.

I was also told to use Terramycin eye ointment, but it didn't work.

Good luck. I hope both of your chicks improve.

I had 3 chicks hatch 2 days ago, I moved the gunky eye in with them so she would be less likely to be stepped on.

Looked like it was starting to clear up for a day(not as gunky) but it came back and still there.

Still hasn't spread to anyone else.

I think I know whats wrong. If you have your chickens in saw dust or wood shavings and the shavings get wet it can cause that problem. I know there is a medicine with for it but I can't remember. Don't worry it isn't contagious. Make sure that you clean the stuff off so they can see where their food is. That is how they would die from it because they can't see the food. Good luck.

No wet shavings and only one with it.

That side of face seems to be a bit swollen.

Still wiping it out.

What can I give the baby and is it readily available without a prescription?
