Hello. I am totally new to chicken rearing and just got my flock of 16 chicks they are currently 4 days old. One of them started acting strangely yesterday. Looking like she was chirping with no sound and slightly fatigued and one of her eyes was really goopy and closed. I had isolated her in the beginning and gave her some water with apple cider vinegar and she definitely perked up and was chirping like crazy to go back to her flock. I tried rinsing her eye with sterile eye solution and wiping with a warm damp cloth. Its extremely goopy and stringy and it feels like as soon as I wipe it away its clogged up all over again. I did get some vetericyn eye gel but I want to make sure I am doing the correct thing for her. I have attached pictures of both her eyes this is after the affected eye had been cleaned 3 hours ago.

You are. If you can find some terramycin eye ointment (picture below) that would be good to use in the eye a couple of times a day, some feed stores and tractor supply stores carry it, no prescription needed. If you can't find that you can use plain neosporin instead. It may have been pecked in the eye, or got debris in there. Does the eye itself look ok? Instead of ACV I would use chick electrolites or a bit of sugar water.

The eye itself looks good. And when I clear away the goop she is normally able to keep it open for a little bit though its still more on the closed side and an odd eyelid shape. I will try the electrolyte water and Neosporin as well. I wasnt sure if the Vetericyn was a similar thing or not. Thank you!

The vetericyn is good for cleaning and flushing, but if there is bacteria present then the antibiotic ointment may be better, to take care of any infection there, or prevent it. If you have another set of hands available, it might be good to have someone hold the chick while you flush the eye real well, make sure there isn't anything stuck in there.

Great thank you so much!
