Finally joined BYC after reading the forums avidly throughout my 2 years of chicken husbandry! We have 4 OEG bantam hens, one OEG rooster (Henry) and their babies, which the proud mama hatched out 8 weeks ago in our barn. 3 are black like mama and 3 silver duckwing like papa, 4 hens and 2 roos. Sadly we will likely need a home for the baby roos, but they are so cute! We also replaced our older laying flock with new girls -- 10 black australorp, 11 white rocks, and 5 EE girls. 10 or so of those will go to local homes soon (also 8 weeks old).... Meanwhile we kept our oldest hen (Henny Penny) as a 'pet'. She's 9, but it turns out she lays an egg every other day like clockwork!! Just put the new babes in with her after 2 weeks of supervised free-ranging. All is well, and she's glad to have the new flock even though they probably drive her nuts with their noise. We've been babysitting outside and having dinner out with the chicks every evening. They love to come clean up around our baby's high chair (LOL) although now they are getting brave enough to fly right up on the table. So it was time for them to go into the main coop and the regular chicken run. Anyhow, thanks to BYC for all the advice over the years!
