Hi BYC community. I have had layer hens for more than 10 years; usually only 3-5 birds but our last were lost to a fox while we were on vacation last May. (our son shut them in every night for 20 nights and forgot the night before we came home!!!!) So no chickens all last summer and this winter. I decided to really go all the way this time and ordered Cackle hatchery's Crazy Chicken Lady selection for April delivery which means I'll be raising chicks for the first time. Have found the articles about brooder containers, feeding, heating, etc. incredibly helpful and look forward to being a member of the community. About me: I'm a retired MD in the Champlain Valley of Vermont - love biking, alpine and nordic skiing and spending time with my family.

Hello, sorry to read of your previous losses, that's never easy. Congrats on the upcoming chicks, they are a lot of fun to raise and grow so quickly! If you ever have questions, just ask and you'll find answers. Thanks for joining us!

Oh, I hope you enjoy brooding your chicks! I always think it is a fun time. I've ordered from Cackle and had a good experience with them, so I hope the same for you! It should be fun to see what comes in the variety pack.

It definitely sounds like you have found some good brooding information already, but never hesitate to ask around here! Definitely a large amount of chicks brooded by all the fabulous BYC members so there are plenty of people with experience here that would love to help.

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!
