First time chick owner panic!

Quote:
If it is 90 degrees out and you have a heat lamp, take the towel off. They don't need it and they do need ventilation. Make sure they have plenty of room to get away from the heat if needed. Otherwise it sounds like everything is fine-enjoy your new babies!! PICS!!

Congratulations on your new babies!! You've got your hands full with 51 ~ I fussed like crazy over my 6

Just to reinforce what everyone else has said, it also sounds to me that you're doing everything right. I pretty much learned as I went along.

After I got over the initial "new mommy" nervousness, I found that the babies could pretty much tell me if something was wrong...if they were too warm, they'd spread out around the walls of the brooder or into the shady part (make sure you have an area that's covered so they can get away from the heat lamp if they need to). If they were too cold, they'd huddle together under the lamp...I'd just make adjustments as necessary. And changed their "diapers" (the paper towels on the bottom of the brooder) about a million times a day LOL

Mine also had a distinctive PEEP when they were unhappy...which wasn't often, but I learned quickly that it was different from their happy little contented baby peeps.

Mine will be 10 weeks old tomorrow, so I guess I did ok! Someone told me once that the little ones are a lot tougher than we think...that helped me relax a little.

You came to the right place for support...and we can't wait to see PICS!!

@30chicks: I'm SO sorry to hear about your 10!

I hope the rest are all right!

OP - Try switching to wood pellets instead of shavings. They keep the brooder drier and almost oder free. The pellets dry out the poo within minutes, don't get kicked up in the food or water as much, breaks down to saw dusty stuff that the chicks love to dust bath in. To clean the brooder, you no longer need to replace the bedding (pellets) you just scoop out the dried poo.

See
my update on the waterer-all the way on the bottom of the page!"

trilyn - Do you have pics of the new water pitchers you got to replace the milk jugs?

Do you have to put the waterer on the bottom - or could you put it on the side towards the bottom?

I'm really interested in these as I just ordered 25 fuzzy butts from MPC's 25 Pullet Rainbow Special for $41.50 FREE shipping to be shipped 9/21/09.

If any act slower, seperate them. I forgot where I posted this but some might be slower and with that many they can get lost in the shuffle and get hurt.

I looked at the feed store today. A 40 lb bag of wood pellets was 5.49. Way cheaper than the kitty litter kind.

I need a "bug" towel also. I have bites around my eyes and on my ears. Hate that!!

Thanks! I am loving them so much! I can watch them like a little movie! They are so funny and entertaining! And I adore the sound of all those little feet when they do a chickie stampede when I fill their feeders.
I lost one yesterday. It broke my heart. She was under a corner of the newspaper that I put down under the bedding material. It looks like she just got crushed by the others. She looked so small and pathetic dead. I had a little cry but tried to toughen up because I know things like that happen on a farm.
It was kind of a bad day when I discovered that about half my black stars are male. The hatchery got my order wrong and sent straight run unstead of only female. I have a call into them but won't hear back til Tuesday. I hope they can make right!

By the way, here are few pics. They are so busy the make for blurry pictures but here is a few that turned out ok and show a few of the interesting colorings.

The yellow is our free "exotic" and the stripey one looks like it has cat markings. It is really beautiful. It is from a brown layer variety.

I always 'lift' my waterer up onto a 2X4 after day 3. Helps keep the rest of the place drier.

Congrats.
