First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I kicked my standards out when they were 3 weeks old. They had a lot of feathering, but I also provided a lectro-kennel heating pad suspended on a wooden frame for them to crawl under when they got cold. It got below freezing last night and they did fine (now approx 4 weeks old). Some people brood putside from day 1 using a similar method.

Is it rediculous that I'm already looking at private breeders at add to pretty eggs to my flock for next year

Thank god I'm not alone, my husband would kill me if I told him I was already ordering 16 new chicks! We started at wanting 4, currently have 9 my goodness chicken math

My current hens are 3 1/2 years old (give or take) and Hubby agreed to let me order 3 which turned into 5 that he knew of that somehow turned into six, that somehow turned into seven, that turned into eight, then turned into nine then miraculously turned to ten for my order that ships monday. Luckily hubby forgot how many we ordered in January (5) so I said (8) now I only have to account for two extra! CHICKEN MATH :)

I found someone who has rumpless tufted Araucanas with the prettiest blue eggs within driving distance of me. How could I not order a few? Plus a few real black Ameraucanas? Oh, and lavender orpingtons...

"Oh
Honey,
Those two are the bonus/mystery chicks that the hatchery included in the order!"

I'm a newbie chicken owner in Ohio!! Starting with
3 easter egger
2 black australorp
2 buff Orpington
2 surprises
Meyer hatchery. Picking up the 27th April and 16 May. I can't wait!! Of course with my math, I'll be grabbing a few extras to make me an even 12, but with the May group to let hubs have time to expand coop.

I just got 1 buff orpington, 1 black sexlink and 1 blue andalusian. The first 2 are about 2 weeks old and my little blur is about a week and a half. I also have a 1 year old black australorp! Super excited to see all of them together when they get bigger
