We are building our first coop and enclosed run for 5 chickens, thats if one of them isn‘t a rooster. We have a 4x4 coop with it open underneath so that‘s 4 feet of run. Then we are trying to figure out if a 4-5 foot covered run would be enough For the 5 chickens? I would love any advice. Here is a picture of our coop in the works. Also, any advice on ground in the run? We currently have cleared dirt that has little roots and worms throughout. Should I cover with clean soil and sand? What about adding in food grade diatomaceous earth ? We have cream leghorns, Silver laced Wyandotte’s, and Asian. Thank you!

Don't bother.

Wood chippings are my fav.

Might depend on how you plan on 'cleaning' and ......

If you have room I'd go 10x10 for the run (you can stick the coop right inside it too) because even though you only have 4 or 5 birds, the minimal 10 sq ft per really doesn't feel like much when the overall space is that small.
