Hello fellow chickeneers!!
First time chicken parents here and already loving it. Wanted to add an outdoor family activity that everyone would enjoy and also teach our 5yr old daughter about responsibility and the joys that come with caring for and raising something that can also reward with things like fresh eggs!! (More time outside and away from the TV is also a huge bonus).
We decided on four 15 week old pullets to make it a little easier and avoid the first few steps needed for chicks.
We received them 3 days ago and have already adopted a fifth from my wife’s coworker who lost all but one to some foxes recently. I guess “chicken math” is a real thing, lol.
Our birds:
Easter Egger
Buff Orpington
Black Star
Rhode Island Red
Jersey Giant (adopted).
Backyard Chickens seems to be one of the most recommended sources of information as we dive into this wonderful learning experience.
We are very excited and already looking forward to adding some more breeds and expanding our flock this summer.
