The first few days chicks aren't sure what food is, so they tend to eat shavings. That is why you may want to put paper towels over shavings until they realize where their feeder is and eat from there. After that they may scratch around a lot in shavings because that is what chickens do on grass, weeds, dirt, etc. looking for bugs etc. to eat. Glad you joined BYC.

I am so glad I joined BYC. You are all so nice. Thank you for the advice. I felt like I was going into this blind and that maybe everyone was right and I was a nut for wanting to raise chickens. Now I know I am not alone. I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow when I bring them home. I will try to take pictures and post them.
