Hello, I am a freshman in highschool and have recently got my first chicken. I originally had two, but my silver lace died the morning after we got her at a local Farm and Home Supply. The other chicken is an Easter Egger Ameracanus pullet of which I named Philomena. It has been about two weeks since I got her, and I think she has really started to take a liking to me!
What I am concerned about is that she is alone for the time I'm away. Is it okay to raise a chick alone without another to communicate to?

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry for the loss of your baby chick. Chicks are highly sociable creatures and do much better with others of their kind around them. However you can take the place of another bird if you give them enough attention. Many people keep lone birds in the house as house pets when they do not plan on getting any more chickens, or for many reasons as well. If you do keep her outside, she may get pretty lonely by herself and surviving winters might be hard on her to keep warm.

If you are interested in keeping her inside as a pet, here is a very active thread on house chickens. Lots of people do this. So even keep them in diapers. You might ask some questions here if you are thinking about doing this....

Enjoy your bird and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the loss of your first chick, glad Philomena is doing well. X3 chickens are flock animals and if she is going to be alone for long periods of time another chick or two would be a good idea.

Very social creatures, indeed. I had not had chickens for very long the first time I had some. I had to move out of state, so I gave my hens to a woman who sold eggs but kept my 1 and only rooster. It was tragic. Biggest mistake I ever made concerning my boy. He became depressed and died in shortly after my move. If I were to offer a word, I as well, would advise getting at least one more companion. The same socialization is important with my pet rats. The rule of thumb for me now is this: Room for one is room for two. Fair thee well. ;)

If she is still pretty young you can give her a stuffed toy to cuddle with, and a mirror, so she thinks there is another chick around the brooder. Chickens do love having a buddy or two but, if raised in the home - you would become that buddy.
