Hi all!! I never thought I would LOVE chickens! Who knew... I love them and they are pets and are lifers... LOL I got them in April one rir 2 Dominique and one that is a Cornish cross which I did not know was a meat chicken and supposed to be a hen named bertha but bertha started crowing so is now named Bert LOL... Does anyone else have one of these so called meat chickens...its said how they modified these birds... But Bert is happy and healthy and a very good rooster to his hens as well as being highly intelligent and personable.. I just love him.. Just curious if anybody else has one.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I don't currently have any Cornish cross, but I've had them in the past. They are produced by crossing a Cornish rooster with a White Rock hen. The resulting offspring grow much faster than either parent breed and are ready for butchering at 8 weeks. The problem with trying to keep them long term is that the begin to develop very serious health problems at a young age due to their abnormal growth rate. If you want Bert to have any chance to reach a year old, you need to severely restrict his food intake, and even then you'll be very lucky if he lives to be a year old. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with Bert.

It is also suggested that Cornish x be allowed to forage with the rest of the flock, so they have to exercise like a normal chicken.

Michael and Drumstick have given you some good tips for keeping Bert around longer and healthy. Good luck with him!

Thanks for joining us!

Bert is free range with his three hens... I have been keeping a close eye on him... So far so good. the thing is these stores shouldn't sell these to the general public.. Cornish cross meant nothing to me.. I was actually devastated when I found out what it is.. So I'm going to give him the best life possible for as long as I can...
