Hello all. My wife and I purchased some silkie bantams the other day! We have lost three in about two days! We had them vaccinated before they came, and have there pen set up to their needs! Some seem to be thriving, and some seems to be the same size. Any helpful tips on how to keep the rest of our lil guys alive? Also, I just had to clean hard, dried poo off of one of them. Any tips would help!

That may be what is killing them. Do they have poo blocking their vents? It can prohibit elimination and cause death. Young chicks are particuliarly suspectible. Put"Pasty buff" in the search box and it should bring up a wealthy of information." Some people claim putting a bit of apple cider vinegar in the water will treat/prevent it. Check often to see that everyone is able to poo, clean off behinds when necessary. Sometimes trimming feathers away from the vent opening and using a bit of Vaseline there can help passage .

I just re-read your post and notice you have silkies. They have an abundance of feathering so are more likely to get "stopped up," There are several dedicated silkie threads, if you put

Silkie Thread" in the search box, they should come up. They can give you information more tailored to the breed and can be a good source of more chicks, if you want to replace the others.

Sorry for your loss! I hope the rest of them make it and thrive for you. Best of luck and welcome to the site!
