First-time Chicken Wrangler

Your mother would be delighted! Indeed! I'm new to this chicken thing and just love hearing about others first experiences. I love how you documented the stages. You have a great looking flock there!

If my husband weren't around to keep me grounded....well. Let's just say I'd have a bigger flock

Anyway, welcome to the group. You're not gonna find a nicer, friendlier, more welcoming bunch than those that are members on this site. This site has been an valuable resource for me!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join us. Great introduction. I really enjoyed reading it. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

I am very sorry to hear about your momma. Such a gift to have her live with you her final 3 years.

Great story and job with your flock!

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

I am really enjoying my flock. I love the soft sounds they make when running around or settling in for the night. On my wish list is a portable screened tent/gazebo so I can sit out near them and work without being eaten alive by the bugs. (I'm evidently a sweet treat to them all.

Spent the afternoon and evening at the Northern Maine Agricultural Fair, so I won't get to read or post much more today. There were some Show Girls and a Silkie, along with maybe four chickens in the 4H exhibits but that was pretty much it for the chicken contingent.

No more eggs when I returned home, either. Maybe tomorrow.

Hi Liddy!

I found you! (yes, I probably should have thought of looking you up under Liddy....) Are you anywhere close to Windsor? Here is a link to all the poultry shows in Maine: http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/Maine.html

but be careful if you go! (that's how I started my run-away hobby), but there will be so many different kinds of chickens to look at.

Thank you all for the additional welcomes.

I got another egg on Saturday, one more slightly undersized on Monday and Tuesday I got a FULL-SIZED, 2-OZ, MARKET WEIGHT LARGE BROWN EGG! Today she game me yet another big beauty, along with another first effort two hours later.

Yesterday I spent some time picking up pullets and putting them in the nesting boxes. Three of them settled in and spent time there, moving shavings around and hunkering down. I'm hopeful!

Bantymom, I'm way up north, near the Canadian border. Windsor is down south, in Kennebec County. Hours away, I'm afraid. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Cautions are necessary. I'm already thinking of how to expand the coop. Purely for practical purposes - the chickens are so dusty that the rest of the space really isn't suitable for anything else.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
