so I have 10 hens that have just started laying. they all seem to go for one nest but then they hog it for hours without laying so that’s one problem but the biggest problem is the one laying while roosting. The other day I found two soft shell eggs in the coop under the roost and one the day before. None yesterday and then today a hard shell egg under the roost. It’s never in the same spot so I don’t know who it is. Is this because she’s new or because of another reason? I’m getting odd numbers of eggs from 3 to 6 including weird soft shell jelly eggs in random places. The first one I found was in the yard and freaked me out when I went to pick it up and all the chicken s thought I left food and frenzy devoured it while I was still in shock lol. Is This something they will grow out of?

Most likely, yes.
New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying, spreading the bedding everywhere. They will scratch around a bit less in nest as they get used to the routine. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.

How many nests do you have?
Put a fake egg in each nest to help 'spread the love'.
