I give them 24 hours before I start an assist. Sometimes I will widen the pip around 18 hours to check and make sure positioning at least looks right and then let them go to 24.

That's great! Our very first hatch was for an Oviporous animal study for my son's first grade science, (we homeschool), had no intention of raising chickens. No interest wahtsoever...lol Borrowed the incubator and eggs from my sister who does raise chickens, about an hour away from us and she was supposed to take any chicks that hatched back...well....it didn't work that way and a year and a half later I still have her incubator and 2 large coops with 30+ chickens...lol

It's been a great experience for my boy though. He's even handled the losses very well.
